Marzouq magic provides HQ triumph

MARZOUQ relished the step up in trip to a mile and a quarter to take a valuable handicap at Newmarket’s July Festival this afternoon.

It was a thoroughly deserved victory for the son of Spring At Last, who has not been out of the first four in any of his six starts this year.

He’d been second in three of his four previous outings, including when beaten a head at Goodwod last month.

This was the first time connections had opted to step up to this trip and it proved an inspired move.

Jockey John Egan judged the race to perfection, ensuring Marzouq was in prominent position as soon as the stalls opened.

Atkinson Grimshaw cut out the early speed but Egan always had the bottom-weight in his sights.

The Godolphin challenge emerged on the outer as both Oasis Charm and Leshlaa loomed up.

But Marzouq stayed on strongly to power between Atkinson Grimshaw and Oasis Charm before recording victory by three parts of a length at odds of 6/1. It was a second career win and earned the first prize of just over £43,000.

Trainer Jeremy Noseda said: “He has run well all year. That was a really brave performance and a great credit to the horse, who is a delight to train.”
